Remembering Syd

Thanks for visiting this site. Syd died on this day in 2006, from complications arising from diabetes. One of the most influential musicians in British pop history, he was as appreciated as much for his iconoclastic approach to the electric guitar as for his adventurous and imaginative songwriting.

He was also quintessentially English, penning idiosyncratic and unique songs, while, along with Ray Davies, was probably responsible for a whole generation of musicians feeling that it was acceptable not to be American and to develop their own indigenous band of rock music.

If you'd like to take a moment to explore his songs on the first two Pink Floyd albums or his solo recordings, please do. Or enjoy some of his paintings, by clicking on 'Art Works' under the Guest Book, which you are welcome to sign if you'd like to record your own thoughts.

Shine on.

Syd's Self-portrait Stolen From Exhibition

Syd Barrett: Self-portrait.The huge success of the Syd Barrett: Arts & Letters exhibition in London has been overshadowed by the news that a self-portrait by Syd has been stolen.

Syd's 31cm x 23cm painting was stolen from London's Idea Generation Gallery some time between 2.15 and 3.00pm on Saturday 9th April. Libby Gausden, owner of the painting and a former girlfriend of Syd's, has issued a heartfelt plea for its return. A reward of £2,000 has been offered for information leading to the painting's safe return; callers should telephone the Idea Generation Gallery on +44 (0)20 7749 6850.

Syd painted the self-portrait between 1961 and 1962 and gave it to Libby Gausden, then his girlfriend. This was the first time it had been shown in exhibition. Libby said: "I am very upset at the theft of the painting; it has huge personal value to me and I am appealing for its safe return".

Anyone who has any information or clues to the whereabouts of the painting should call the number above.
